Don’t let him be bored – color your hair!
Dick has never been sure just what color hair his wife would have when he came home.
You see, I have very curly, unruly hair – always have had. So, I’ve always done my own hair – the cutting, the coloring, etc. Yes, there have been surprises through the years. There is a reason that Dick’s nieces for years, called me “Aunt Barbie with that pretty pink hair”.
Just two weeks ago, I found a hair coloring – on sale – in a store. What a bargain…and what a surprise, when the towel came off after mixing the color properly, applying and waiting for it to set and then washing, conditioning and – ta da – so dark and so “not natural” looking…certainly not the color depicted on the box. I jut thought – oh well Barbie, it will wash out – in a month or so. And, in only two weeks, it’s beginning to look pretty good!
Years ago, we lived in a little neighborhood where everyone could see everything that went on. I heard one day that one neighbor had informed another that Dick had a red head coming and going… I laughed …just another bad experience with the dye. That same neighbor used to always inform me when we left the attic light on. I’ve come to believe that it takes people like that to keep a neighborhood safe. But you do have to ke
ep a good frame of mind – neighbors like that can also sometimes be a bit trying! Now, I love the fact that if a friend pulls into our driveway, I can be assured that at least one neighbor has looked out their window and taken note of it… and that’s a good thing.
Then, I remember another time, walking down the street in Columbus, Ohio, wearing a pink angora sweater, (that tells you how long ago that was) and thinking, well, at least I’m coordinated – ‘cause my hair was the same soft pink shade as the sweater… the nieces just loved that color.
One summer, we were planning to vacation in Florida. At that particular time, I had quite long hair – now, remember, this was a long time ago. I had heard, from a couple of friends that you could just iron your hair, and it would come out straight and beautiful! So, of course, I figured – wow, that’s for me – then we could head to Florida, into all that humidity, and I wouldn’t be bothered with the tight curls that always showed up – I would have this great straight hair. So, out comes the iron – set on high. I flung my hair on the ironing board, and applied the iron – yep, you guessed it…..sizzle, sizzle…… and I ended up going to Florida with hair about half an inch inch long – and curly as usual. The stink of my burned hair hung in the house for days before we left…
Now, my hair fiascos would not even stand out as unusual or even interesting. I see blue hair, purple hair, No hair, heads with designs cut in the hair, etc. Did I start a bad thing? Don’t think so… most of my hair colors were purely accidental… afraid the young folks do it on purpose now a-days… probably for pure shock value.
Times have changed, styles have changed
– and yes, Dick and I have changed. We’re moving a bit slower now, and moving more cautiously. A fall can produce broken bones and that’s not a good thing for folks like us – over – oh, let’s say 55. BOY! That’s sad…55 sounds really young! Where does the time go?
So, for right now, I’ll just keep washing a bit more color out, and I’ll be back to blond in no time. But then, there is the thought that Dick is always kept on his toes – cause he never knows just what he’s coming home to – only difference is now-a-days he comes home from the grocery store or the woodshop instead of home from the office – to – who know what next week!
An email from a Reader:
Barbie – thank you for keeping up the emails — I need to be reminded on a regular basis that Mexico is most likely in our future. Our general plan is to spend a couple weeks in San Miguel de Allende to check it out. Then I’m hoping my wife will agree to a six month to one-year sabbatical there. We’ll start with that and see what happens.
I’ll keep your info handy and then when we take the trip I’ll let you know — I’m estimating the trip to take place early next spring (this year is “booked” up).
Take care. XXX
