I recently ran
into this true
story about the
perceptions of the word “safe”:
A former Dallas, Texas, police officer moved to the Lake Chapala area, considered to be a safe spot, in Mexico. He met a lovely Mexican lady and eventually got married. A wonderful 84-year old Mother-in-law welcomed him into the family.
The majority of the news that the Mother-in-law and her family received about the U.S. was from t.v. From what she saw on the news channels, she was convinced the U.S. was a very dangerous place. After all, she saw reports about children shooting children – mothers killing children – husbands killing their wives – students killing their teachers – such a scary country.
So it has became a strict rule that anytime this Expat gentleman and his Mexican wife want go to the States to visit any of his family, they first must go to the Mother-in-law’s home so she can say a special “safe” blessing prayer on them, in hopes that they stay safe on their trip to the dangerous United States. Different perspective, huh?
Yes, the drug-lords in Mexico and especially around the border, are causing lots of trouble – but, remember, it’s mainly because they have such a wonderful place to sell their product – to all the people buying their product in the United States.

Hi, I visit Mexico every year and have not had any problems with crime. My cousin lives in Mexico City and travel to different towns and cities throughout Mexico. I do have a concern, is it truly safe to travel in Mexico or is everyone just sugar coating the subject. I plan to travel with my gringo(i say this with much affection and love) husband and i am concerned for his safety.

Hi Laura – Sure wish I had a definite answer for this question. It is true the drug people are worse than ever? Yes. Have there have been kidnappings? Yes! Have there been the same in the States? Yes! Is it true many Mexican law inforcers are also on the take? Yes! You just have to know where you’re going, what you need to do, and be prepared. Even so, you may walk down the center of main street, U.S.A. or Merida, Mexico, and be shot – who knows? There just are no guarantees. If you are too worried – don’t do the traveling. If you feel alright about it – then, go and enjoy. Barbie

Oh dear – I guess I am guilty of something I really don’t like – expecting people to know stuff that has become second hand to me. I especially, when reading an article (I guess just as you have done), that I’m actually interested in and those darn initalized groups creep in like – “the head of the abdcyxz” the head of what??? So, I really apologize! Then, I need to tell you – Expat is just an abbreviation for expatriot…someone residing in a country other than that of the person’s origin. Does not mean that we are saying we are not still patriotic – Dick and I do have a fatherland or motherland (let’s not get sexist) that is and always will be the United States of America – the country of our origin. But, expatriot, from the Latin, ex (out of), and pater (father, patria=fatherland) – So, someone from one country, living out of that country.
Another thing that really ticks me off… someone typing or writing I love u – good grief – add the other two letters and spell you out…well, that’s off my shoulders :) I do try to use proper English – forgive me if I slip.

Oh really is it? I did not know that I keep hearing mix thing about Mexico. My girlfriend is there for a week and she tells me she loves it there.

Well the crime rates are higher in Mexico, but you do have a point. It is not nearly as scary as we think it is. its about your perception, like you said.
